Guest Post at Choosing Wisdom: 5 Takeaways From Failure

Today’s post was written for Lori Jackson’s blog Choosing Wisdom.

My friend Amanda Jensen is starting her health and fitness coaching business and invited me to join her September Accountability group. I was excited to join because getting healthier has been on my mind now for quite some time.

Unfortunately, I have allowed other things to distract me from taking care of myself physically. I am growing exponentially spiritually and intellectually, but I have been seriously neglecting my physical body.

Ready for a Change…

Finding Your Focus

Years ago, while study abroad in Israel, a field trip landed us just along the beaches of the Red Sea in the small town of Eilat. With a warning to keep our distance from the coral, we were given a snorkel, flippers and brief “how to” before being left to explore on our own.

Having never snorkeled or even experienced the painful beauty of coral, I ineptly worked my way into the water.  I was not 10 feet away from shore when I witnessed another student exiting the water with blood running down his leg – the result of getting too close to the coral.

Guest Post at Choosing Wisdom: Environments are Stronger than Willpower

Today’s post was written for Lori Jackson’s blog Choosing Wisdom.

The last few weeks I have been actively re-organizing and re-decorating my home and office. My boys are with their Dad for the summer, and yet for some reason, the clutter remained. I didn’t realize how much it was negatively impacting me until I started finding a place for everything, started taking down old things, and replacing them with new things that I loved.

It is truly amazing how much impact our environment has in our lives. For example, imagine you want to loose weight and eat healthier but you have candy dishes out on the counter, soda in the fridge, and junk food in your closet. It’s going to be hard to eat healthy when you are surrounded by temptations. In this case, the environment is practically setting you up for failure.

“Environment is stronger than willpower.” – Paramahansa Yogananda

Guest Post at Choosing Wisdom: If It’s Worth Doing, It’s Worth Doing Well

Today’s post was written for Lori Jackson’s blog Choosing Wisdom.

Daddy-Daughter-Day-1994My Grandfather was one of the most influential people in my life. He has been a continual source of inspiration even though he is no longer with me.

He taught me many things, but one thing sticks out in particular: “if something is worth doing, it is worth doing well.”

This idea has served me well in my personal, professional, and school life.

Guest Post at Choosing Wisdom: Learning and Teaching is One of the Greatest Services We Can Give

Learning and Teaching is One of the Greatest Services We Can Give

There are few things more impactful than a teacher. And not just any teacher, a great teacher.

Great teachers connect with their students on a deep level, they care about them, and they know what they are talking about. Great teachers inspire a lifetime of learning and encourage us to think deeply and actually apply what we’ve learned.

Teachers come in all shapes and sizes. Some are in your family, and some are not. Some are soft-spoken, and some are not. And while no two teachers may look or act the same, they all have a love of learning and provide us a service by teaching.

The Gift of Agency: What You Treasure, There Will Your Heart Be Also

In the New Testament, Matthew reminds us that where your treasure is, there will your heart be also… We have been given the gift of agency.

We have the power to choose good or bad. We can choose to be happy or not. We can choose to fail or to learn. This is the one gift no one can take from us—the power to choose.

Guest Post at Choosing Wisdom: Why Kindness Benefits Yourself as Well as Others

Today I am a Guest Blogger at Lori Jackson’s blog Choosing Wisdom.

Why Kindness Benefits Yourself as Well as Others

From the time we are small we are taught to be nice. Our parents and other teachers in our lives encourage us to make good choices and to be kind in our interactions with other people. This is for a good reason. Kindness not only benefits the recipients of our actions, but it also has a positive effect on us and anyone who witnessed the act of kindness too.
