One Year Blogiversary!

1st blogiversary

It has been said that a birthday is just another day, so why even celebrate it? For a blog I suppose you could certainly say the same thing. However, a birthday for an individual signifies their unique beginning and the joy of living. Each person on Earth has an opportunity to fulfill their own unique mission. A birthday truly is an exciting occasion! It’s a time to celebrate, to reflect, and to give thanks. The same thing, I will argue can be said for a blog. After all, isn’t a blog really just an extension of the unique individuals who create it.

The Beginning

Ever since I can remember, I have had a love for stories (in all their forms); but especially reading, music, art, dance, food, and movies. There is beauty in self-expression, and I find that I discover more about myself as I listen to the ‘voices’ of others.

I truly believe that we are here on Earth for one purpose: to evolve; to learn, to grow, and to become better through experience.

I believe that Heavenly Father is actively involved in our lives, and I strive to exemplify Jesus Christ at all times, in all things, and all places. Through this online platform, my goal is to positively impact the lives of others, whether or not they share my belief system.

We are all God’s children, and when it is my time to go, I want to leave this world knowing that in some way, it is a better place because I was here.

The Idea Evolved

I had been battling some pretty significant questions:

  • How can I find joy and meaning in life?
  • What does it mean to actively live? How can I be more present?
  • What do I need to do to grow and develop my talents?
  • How can I give back and help others?
  • Is it possible to find success without having to compromise my personal morals and standards?

Not only were these questions playing in my mind, I was also feeling completely overwhelmed. Life’s pace was running faster than my ability to keep up with everything.

Trying to Do Everything

My biggest problem was that I wanted to be healthy and happy and do all the things on my to do list. For years, I struggled to keep up, I tried to do everything; and the fast pace took a toll on my health and the important relationships in my life.

It quickly became apparent that there would always be more to do than time to do it. After spinning my wheels to try to get more done, I realized that my behavior was actually counterproductive. When I finally started to slow down, I found that by doing less, I was actually doing more of what was important.

I learned that it’s not about doing more things, it’s doing the right things. Working smarter, not harder.

I had to identify what was important, and make those my top priorities: my relationship with my Heavenly Father and my family, my health and well-being, my relationships with my friends, and helping others. Those had to come first, they had been on the back-burner for too long.

The greatest thing I learned, was that even though I had feelings of imperfection, Change is Possible!

The Blog

I created Evolve because it was exactly what I needed.

Evolve is an expression of how to live and make meaningful positive change. We empower individuals to live a life of continuous growth and to make the most of the opportunities and challenges of life.

Our goal is to inspire, uplift, and ultimately make life more joyful.

Evolve’s believes that there are three ingredients to a meaningful life: to live, to grow, and to give. As we actively and intentionally live we learn new things and grow; as we grow we have a desire to help and share our experiences with others; and sharing our talents and giving service helps us experience joy. It is a continuous cycle of living and learning and giving.

There is more to life than merely existing. Trials come to us all, however, it is possible to find “Joy in the Journey.” This is what Evolve is all about. It is making the most of the life that we have, growing and developing our talents, and then giving to others and sharing our talents.

Speaking of the Evolve team… I want to take a moment and recognize my amazing team. There is no way Evolve would be where it is today without Jennifer Wise and Lori Jackson. I am extremely grateful for them and their wonderful talents. They are a continual source of inspiration and wisdom.

When we celebrate someone’s birthday we tend to give them gifts. For a blog it’s a little bit different. Instead of receiving gifts, we will be the one sharing gifts with our amazing readers!

But I would like to take this concept even one step further. Like I mentioned before, Evolve believe’s the key to a meaningful life is to actively live life, continually grow, and to give to others. In my opinion, there is no better way to celebrate a special occasion that to do some special acts of kindness.

Warm Fuzzies

In 2009, Thomas S. Monson gave a powerful talk about service called, What Have I Done For Someone Today? He recalled how after an interview in 2008 he was asked what an ideal birthday gift would be. He replied, “Find someone who is having a hard time or is ill or lonely, and do something for him or her.”

The next year, Thomas S. Monson was overwhelmed with hundreds of cards and letters from around the world telling of the thousands of acts of service done to others in honor of him. One creative gift was a large jar full of hundreds of small pom poms labeled “warm fuzzies.” Each warm fuzzy represented an act of service performed over the course of the year by children.

“Unless we lose ourselves in service to others, there is little purpose to our own lives. Those who live only for themselves shrivel up and figuratively lose their lives, while those who lose themselves in service to others grow and flourish – an in effect save their lives.” – Thomas S. Monson

I would like to challenge our readers to make an effort to give one act of service every day for the month of March as Evolve celebrates our 1 year Blogiversary!

As you give of your time, talents, smiles, or even money to others, know that not only will you be filling your jar of warm fuzzies, you will be filling the jars of those around you.
